Owl on a whim

Nothing gives me more satisfaction when carving a sculpture than using a remanent piece of stone from an old building and turn it into something new.  The chunk of Indiana limestone used to carve this owl sculpture was from an old building that once graced the skyline of Philadelphia, Pa.

While working as a historic restoration stonemason in city of Philadelphia and its suburbs I had the opportunity to repair and replace many architectural elements on some of the finest buildings on the east coast.

No unrepairable stone was never discarded on my jobs but rather would find retirement at my home shop where a stone can sit happily for months or years in my stone yard before I’d decide its new life, as it was with this owl sculpture.

That’s the way this carving stuff works, sometimes you can walk past a stone you’ve looked at for decades and on a whim you think today is the day I think I’ll start carving that an owl in a tree...

The owl really seemed to need a roommate.
